Heartburn is a painful occurrence that many people experience, some more than others. If you’re like many people who deal with heartburn, you’re more than likely to be looking for relief from heartburn symptoms, such as acid reflux and chest pain. There are many remedies that can help the pain and discomfort that accompanies heartburn, and some can be everyday items you already have in your home. Here are a few ways to alleviate your symptoms to save you from regretting your most recent meal.

Take Antacids

This might be the most obvious answer, but it’s because antacids are proven to significantly lessen symptoms and provide relief from nausea, acid reflux, and chest pain within minutes. They are made to help neutralize the acid buildup in your stomach. If you’re prone to heartburn, it may be more beneficial to take any over-the-counter medications directly after you eat, which might end up eliminating heartburn altogether before a flare up even starts.

Incorporate Probiotics

Probiotics are a necessary part of people’s diets, but many people don’t give them a second thought. In fact, lack of probiotics could very well be the main cause for any gastrointestinal issues you may have been experiencing. Though increasing your probiotic intake won’t necessarily help with acid reflux, it can help with bloating and other symptoms that come with heartburn.

If you’re looking into probiotics as an option and you want to see a significant difference in your gut health, make sure to get quality products that have higher counts of good bacteria.

Eat Bananas

Bananas are the world’s natural antacid. They contain a very low acidity compared to their other fruit counterparts, which is really good for your digestive system. Keep bananas on-hand for an after-dinner snack to relieve your heartburn, or try eating one a day to fight off heartburn as a  preventative measure.

Chew Gum

Chewing gum has proven to reduce the acidity in your stomach and esophagus. This is due to the increase in saliva production when chewing the gum. Saliva has special enzymes that help break down and digest your food, decreasing the chance of heartburn.

When To See A Doctor

Heartburn is an uncomfortable and sometimes extremely painful condition that many people can’t seem to get over, no matter what they try to help relieve it. Though many people start to see improvements from lifestyle and dietary changes, that isn’t always the case in more severe cases of heartburn. If you’re experiencing heartburn often, or the pain is unbearable, you may need to seek the opinion of a doctor to explore other options.
