Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

burning stomach run up your chest female

Today is the Day.

Aarrghh. It’s 11 p.m. and you’ve been trying to get to sleep for what seems like hours. You feel that burning run up your chest to your throat and try to cough it away. That didn’t help, so you sip water and take antacids. Finally, you go to the living room to your favorite chair in hopes that you “can sit-up sleep.” This is the second time this week you’ve had these symptoms and a decent night’s sleep would be welcome.

Morning comes way too soon. “Today is the day,” you tell yourself. Today is the day you are finally calling your doctor.

See your Doctor.

Your doctor is sure you have acid reflux disease but wants to make a positive diagnosis. He refers you to a Gastroenterologist, a specialist in stomach diseases. After careful examination and a listening ear, you are prescribed an acid inhibitor, or a pill to help reduce the production of acid in your stomach. Over time, stomach acid can cause erosion of the esophagus, which sometimes can be serious.

After about 24 hours of taking your medication, you begin to notice a difference. You are able to fall asleep without all that discomfort and pain. A good night’s sleep makes all the difference. And the best part? You can still eat that seafood boil at the bay this weekend.

Millions have GERD.

Millions of people have GERD or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. GERD is when the acid from the stomach flows backward into the esophagus. GERD is painful and at the very least uncomfortable. Millions of people also suffer needlessly and won’t go to their doctor, when many times a diagnosis can be made without expensive tests and procedures.

In the past few years, a procedure called a TIF has become an available option for Gastroenterologists. The TIF procedure is done without any incisions and may be an alternative for those who don’t want to take medications daily.
